Description of www.capla.ca

The internet site www.capla.ca (CAPLA.ca) is an initiative of CAPLA and is an online community of practice dedicated to prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR) in Canada. The CAPLA community supports individuals who wish to learn about PLAR, prepare for assessment and gain recognition for all learning. CAPLA.ca also provides those who use PLAR in their work, researchers and other stakeholders with opportunities to share information, extend the practice of PLAR, network and develop expertise.

CAPLA’s goals are to promote the improvement of PLAR practice and to advance quality assessment and recognition of learning in Canada. All users of CAPLA.ca agree to be bound by the terms and conditions of this Website and Privacy Policy. Please read this Website and Privacy Policy carefully before accessing CAPLA.ca or using/obtaining any of the resources, information and/or tools found on CAPLA.ca.

Consent

CAPLA will not collect, use or disclose to a third party your personal information without your consent except:

  1. in accordance with this policy;
  2. where required or permitted to do so by law; or
  3. where such information could aid in an emergency where people’s lives and/or safety may be at stake.

In addition, CAPLA will not disclose your personal information to a third party without your consent except where such information is required to be disclosed for processing past due accounts, billing or settlement of services and/or publication fees. CAPLA will use reasonable efforts to ensure that you are advised of the purposes for which the information will be used in a way that you can reasonably understand. Consent may be expressed in writing or implied, depending on all the surrounding circumstances, including the purposes for which it is being collected and the sensitivity of the information. In some cases, you may provide consent verbally, electronically or through an authorized representative.

Collection, Use and Disclosure of Personal Information

Personal information is information about an identifiable individual. This information could include your name, address and contact information (including e-mail address) or, in certain cases, financial information that you provide to CAPLA. Although an individual may access CAPLA.ca without revealing personal information, certain services offered through CAPLA.ca, such as the Discussion Board and MyRFL, may only be accessed once you have joined CAPLA.ca as a member and have chosen a user name.

Personal information about you is only made publicly available if you decide to do so by checking some settings on your profile in the Members’ List on the Discussion Board.

Collection of personal information by CAPLA and/or through CAPLA.ca is limited to the information necessary for purposes that have been identified by CAPLA. These purposes will be identified either before or when the Personal Information is collected.

Personal information is collected by CAPLA for the following purposes:

  1. to join CAPLA.ca and to permit you access to the Discussion Board as well as other interactive products and services that may be developed or available through CAPLA.ca;
  2. to allow CAPLA.ca to provide you access to the User Groups on the Discussion Board that you choose or are invited to join;
  3. to verify the identify of a Discussion Group member in the case of misuse of the Discussion Board or other sections of CAPLA.ca;
  4. to offer you new products and services associated with PLAR that CAPLA feels could be of interest to you;
  5. where applicable, to process your request for products and services through CAPLA.ca or through CAPLA;
  6. to send notification of new information or activities or to request new information;
  7. to send notification of additional membership privileges (for those who become members of the CAPLA.ca site);
  8. to gain feedback on the use of CAPLA.ca; and
  9. to meet legal and regulatory requirements.

When posting any information on the Discussion Board, you decide on how much personal information will be displayed on each posting. Each individual member controls the scope and extent of the content of the personal profile that is displayed on your personal profile of the Member List on the Discussion Board. An individual’s profile may be revised by them at any time. A “user name” is a name chosen by the individual for the purposes of joining CAPLA.ca and for other purposes, such as the Discussion Board.

When posting any comments or information in connection with the Discussion Board, participants should be aware that a public posting on the CAPLA.ca Discussion Board is available to all viewers or members of CAPLA.ca. CAPLA has no control over the subsequent use or disclosure of information posted and does not update information posted as part of the Discussion Board. Similarly, although information added on a “private” Discussion Board will only be accessible to members of that group, CAPLA has no control over the subsequent use of information that a Discussion Board member may voluntarily post. Highly sensitive information or information that a participant does not wish to become public should not be posted on any Discussion Board.

From time to time, CAPLA may request feedback from members for CAPLA’s purposes – including purposes associated with PLAR. The provision of such feedback or comments is entirely voluntary. However, once feedback or comments have been provided, CAPLA may compile or use that feedback or the comments for purposes identified when the feedback or comments are sought.

CAPLA collects and uses the personal information it collects only for identified purposes and will notify you and provide you with an opportunity to refuse your consent before using personal information for any other purpose. If information that has been collected is to be used for a purpose CAPLA did not previously identify, CAPLA will notify you either in person or through RFL, identify the new purpose and provide you with an opportunity to refuse to consent to the use of your personal information for that new purpose. Similarly, if CAPLA must collect additional personal information it will identify the purpose for the collection and provide you with an opportunity to refuse consent.

CAPLA does not sell, lend or otherwise redistribute users’ e-mail addresses, names, or any other personal information without consent. From time to time, CAPLA may retain the services of a third party consultant to assist CAPLA in evaluating and further developing CAPLA.ca. In such case, personal information will be provided to that third party consultant on a strictly confidential basis.
